The Friday MP3 Shuffle #14

Every Friday I let my mp3 player decide my playlist for the weekend.

Because I'm such a nice guy I upload this mix for ya'll to enjoy. Each mix will only be online for a week, with each new one the last one gets deleted, so grab 'em while you can.

I love this week's mix, the first half being classic death metal (with Fantômas thrown in just for the hell of it) and the second half consists of recent grindcore hits (with Slayer thrown in just for the hell of it) and then the whole thing finishes with apocalyptic doom from Ahab.

Absolutely brilliant. If you don't download this, you're an idiot.

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #13

Every Friday I let my mp3 player decide my playlist for the weekend.

Because I'm such a nice guy I upload this mix for ya'll to enjoy. Each mix will only be online for a week, with each new one the last one gets deleted, so grab 'em while you can.

I think this might be the best one yet, one epic classic after another. 6:35-8:34 of Judas Priest's Run Of The Mill is the very definition of an eargasm. Music rarely gets better than that.

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #13 (69 mb)

1. Patton Oswalt - 80's metal (2004)
2. Anvil - Jackhammer (1982)
3. Blitzkrieg - Saviour (1985)
4. Witchcraft - Hey doctor (2007)
5. Warhorse - Burning (1970)
6. King Crimson - Epitaph (1969)
7. Iron Maiden - Remember tomorrow (1980)
8. Judas Priest - Run of the mill (1974)
9. Gentle Giant - A cry for everyone (1972)
10. Candlemass - Under the oak (1986)
11. Clutch - A shogun named Marcus (1993)
12. Kyuss - Spaceship landing (1995)

Neue scheisse aus Anaal Nathrakh, Devildriver, Gallows und Behemoth

Hiatus schmiatus.

British noise terrorists Anaal Nathrakh (either the best or worst band name ever) will unleash In The Constellation Of The Black Widow, their 5th full-length, on June 29th.

Gallows' second album Grey Britain came out on May 2nd and has already gotten near universal praise. I've listened to it at least 20 times and while it's definitely a good album, certainly better than their 2006 debut Orchestra Of Wolves, I'm hardly over the moon about it.

My opinion on the matter might very well change, as it tends to do, but at the moment all I'm hearing is a limey version of Doomriders, or perhaps The Bronx.

I've always been a bit torn regarding DevilDriver, mostly because they have the bigger loser and poser in metal behind the mic, the astonishingly pathetic Dez Fafara, formerly of Coal Chamber.

Their 4th album Pray For Villains comes out on July 14th and judging from the title track they have the same problem they've always had: Great musicianship, fine riffs, adequate songs, all ruined by aforementioned douchebag.

But I admit, reluctantly so, that Dez's vocals have improved and he doesn't sound as constipated as he used to. Who knows, by the 10th album he might actually be tolerable.

Polish death/black metal loonies Behemoth will release their 9th album Evangelion on August 7th, and since they haven't released any new material from it (that I know of) and nothing has leaked (that I know of), here's some cool footage of Nergal recording vocals for the album. Apparently his secret is corn flakes. Whodda thunk it?

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #12

Yeah yeah yeah, I know the blog is supposed to be on hiatus, but I keep making these Friday mixes (too late to quit, they've become essential to my weekend survival), so I figured I'd throw 'em up here.

Thirteen tracks of dark, dingy, droning dirges. Perhaps not the most appropriate music for a day like this when the sun is shining, birds are chirping and the smell of freshly cut grass permeates the air, but it will have to do.

Enjoy.

The Hunt For Gollum

Yes, I admit I am a Tolkien fiend. A nerd, even. Not to the point where I dress up as a ranger and run around in the woods fighting orcs alongside people dressed as elves, but still pretty nerdy.

Tomorrow a 40 minute film entitled The Hunt For Gollum will premier right here. Be there. I know I will.

This non-profit film was made by fans for almost no money at all over the period of two years and centers around a part of the appendices of Lord Of The Rings where Aragorn and Gandalf try to find Gollum to access information about the ring.

Did you see Peter Jackson's movie? You know the part after Bilbo's birthday party when he leaves his home and all his possessions to Frodo? Well, The Hunt For Gollum is set inbetween that scene and the scene where Gandalf returns to tell Frodo about the dangers of the ring.

A great interview with the director Chris Bouchard can be found right here.

Here's the trailer for the film, and I must say for a film that was made for £3,000, it looks absolutely stunning:

In honor of this magnificent feat, here's Frodo Baggins (as played by Ian Holm) singing The Cow Jumped Over The Moon from the BBC radio production of The Fellowship Of The Ring.

All hail the swine flu! May it wipe out 75% of the earth's population and give some room for the rest of us. Bring forth Ragnarök!

This week the Friday mp3 mix is in honor of Lord Swine Flu, the almighty. The fifth horseman of the apocalypse. May he live long and prosper and slay many lives.
